Gym Etiquette: The Unwritten Rules of the Gym
Most of us learn gym etiquette after we enter the gym for the first time. So you know in advance, here are 12 unwritten rules about etiquette in the gym during workouts:
1. Don't leave personal belongings on equipment. It prevents someone else from using it,
plus you won't be distracted trying to keep up with your things.
2. Avoid loud conversations in the gym or on the cell phone.
3. Don't distract others while they are lifting by walking in front of them or talking to them during a lift.
4. Don't sit on equipment to rest if others are waiting to use it.
5. Keep food out of the workout area.
6. Unload your bar when you're finished and ask others to do the same. It is a common courtesy to
return plates to their proper storage racks so someone else isn't stuck doing it for you.

7. Alternate with others on the same piece of equipment. Rotate in while others rest.
8. Music is the gym is fine, but be sensitive about how loud your own music is and consider who may not appreciate the style. Personal music devices are a good choice.
9. Be sensitive about staring at others. Most of us don't like others to stare at us. Beginners, in particular, may
find staring to be intimidating.
10. Be careful about giving and receiving unsolicited training advice. Your advice may not be right for everyone, or may not be welcome, even if correct.
11. Wear deodorant. Others will appreciate you for that.
12. Heavy perfume in the gym is not pleasant. It does not replace deodorant.
Practicing gym etiquette helps everyone have a more positive experience during workouts.
